We took a lot of road trips as a kid, and boy did I loathe them. Being uncomfortably wedged between my sisters in the backseat of some under-sized car with nothing to do but stare out the windows was torture as a child. The highways lasted as far as my young eyes could see, past the horizon, and then for a hundred miles more, which was basically forever.
To pass the time, I'd think about the other cars on the road, make up stories about who they were and what they were up to. I'd keep myself amused by guessing how long they'd stay in traffic with us. Would they whiz right past or would they leave the highway earlier than we would? I wondered, was their trip coming to an end, or maybe, had their journey only just begun?
And as they inevitably turned off the road onto an exit I had not yet traveled, I knew they must be headed to some exciting destination far more wonderful than anywhere we were headed, not Lockport or Gloversville.
However, there was one trip I adored more than all the others. I loved when I heard we were heading over the twisting, turning winding mountain pass from Glens Falls to Corinth. As a kid, it was basically like riding a roller coaster. Hell, I still love the trip, even at my advanced age. And once you come down the hill and over the river into the village, a sense of serenity fills you. I felt safe; I felt welcome; I felt full of love and the air smelled of cookies and of homemade macaroni and cheese and maybe that is pollution from the paper plant getting to me, but I am thinking it was because my gramma lived there.
She gave counsel. She gave hope. She pulled no punches when she told stories and she didn't put up with no bullshit. I was her first, and therefore best, grandson, as she said. She believed in me, even when I didn't believe in myself. She loved fully and unequivocally. And I am positive that goes for all of us.
You'd never know from the mosaic of pictures that adorned her fridge how blended a family we truly were. That's because there was never a mention of words like “step” or “half” or “in-law” in her home. She welcomed one and all, and once you were in, you were family, period. Even during her bleakest times, I saw her welcome the newest members of our clan with love and joy and open arms. And those arms held us all together.
It was the honor of my life to have had the privilege of officiating her wedding only a few months ago. To play a part in giving those few wonderful moments to a woman who gave all of herself to all of us was a blessing and will be a cherished memory for the rest of my days. She sacrificed and endured far more than most of us will ever realize to build a better life for her children; so they could build for their children a better life still.
And looking upon my family now, I know her efforts were not in vain. She succeeded. Her legacy is secure. We are all better because she was in our lives. She will be missed, so sorely missed. And when we leave here, we will honor our selfless matriarch by keeping on the path she built for us, for her family.
She has departed us, turned off the road to an exit we have not yet traveled, headed to some other exciting destination far more wonderful than anywhere I have ever been.
In our hearts, our memories will remain, and as we move forward, they're only a quick glance in the rear-view mirror away.
And they will endure. Just like those highway roads, they have no end. They continue past the horizon and will live in us all. Forever.
